A Hindu national festival is not a single official term with one fixed meaning. Generally, it refers to major Hindu festivals that are widely celebrated across a whole country or by Hindus everywhere, and which have strong cultural, religious, and social importance.

Commonly referred Hindu “national” festivals

These festivals are celebrated by most Hindus across regions:

  • Diwali (Deepavali) – Festival of lights; symbolizes victory of good over evil

  • Holi – Festival of colors; celebrates joy, unity, and the arrival of spring

  • Dashain (Vijaya Dashami) – Especially national in Nepal; celebrates victory of good over evil

  • Navaratri / Durga Puja – Worship of Goddess Durga over nine days

  • Maha Shivaratri – Dedicated to Lord Shiva

  • Ram Navami – Birth of Lord Rama

  • Krishna Janmashtami – Birth of Lord Krishna
